COSY NIGHTS. BETTER WINE!
LOVE IT? GREAT. CHANGED YOUR MIND? 14-DAY RETURNS
At Guilt Free Wine, cleaner wine is our simple way of describing wines made with greater transparency around how the grapes are grown and how the wine is made.
It isn't an official wine certification, and it doesn't mean that a wine is healthier, hangover-free or completely free from sulphites.
Instead, it helps bring together some of the things our customers regularly look for — including certified organic, biodynamic, preservative-free, low-preservative and vegan-friendly wines.
Here’s what those terms actually mean.
Certified organic wine begins with grapes grown and produced according to recognised organic standards.
Organic standards restrict the use of synthetic agricultural inputs and set requirements around how grapes are grown, handled and processed. Certification also means the producer or vineyard has been independently assessed against the applicable standard.
That distinction matters. Certified organic is different from simply describing a wine as “natural”, “clean” or sustainably made.
In simple terms: certified organic gives you greater transparency about how the grapes have been grown and the standards behind the claim.
Biodynamic farming takes a whole-farm approach to viticulture.
It builds on organic principles and places particular emphasis on soil health, biodiversity, composting and treating the vineyard as an interconnected living system.
Certified biodynamic producers must meet the requirements of the relevant biodynamic certification standard.
Importantly, biodynamic does not automatically mean preservative-free, vegan or alcohol-free. These are separate attributes.
In simple terms: biodynamic describes a particular farming system and philosophy, backed by certification when the wine is sold as certified biodynamic.
Sulphur dioxide, also known as SO₂ or preservative 220, is commonly used in winemaking to help protect wine against oxidation and unwanted microbial activity.
When a wine is described as no added preservatives, it generally means sulphur dioxide has not been intentionally added during winemaking.
However, small amounts of sulphites can occur naturally during fermentation. So no added preservatives does not necessarily mean zero sulphites.
At Guilt Free Wine, we rely on producer information and wine specifications when identifying wines as preservative-free or no-added-preservative.
Low-preservative wines contain some added preservative, but at a lower level than may be used in other styles of winemaking.
Because preservative requirements can vary according to grape variety, wine style, acidity, winemaking method and intended shelf life, there isn't one useful number that describes every “low-preservative” wine.
Where information is available, we provide the relevant producer specifications on our product pages.
Wine begins with grapes, but not every wine is vegan.
Some traditional winemaking processes use animal-derived fining agents such as egg white, milk-derived casein, gelatine or isinglass.
Vegan wines avoid animal-derived processing aids.
Being vegan is separate from being organic, biodynamic or preservative-free — a wine may be one, several or none of these things.
“Natural wine” is generally used to describe wines made with relatively minimal intervention in the vineyard and winery.
Unlike certified organic or certified biodynamic wine, however, natural wine does not have one universally applied certification or definition. Practices can differ considerably between producers.
That's why we prefer to tell you the specific attributes of each wine rather than relying on one broad label.
For Guilt Free Wine, cleaner wine is about clarity, thoughtful production and making it easier to understand what you're buying.
It does not automatically mean:
zero sulphites
zero alcohol
vegan
organic
preservative-free
healthier
hangover-free
Each of those is a separate characteristic and should be considered on its own.
We believe you shouldn't need to decode a wine label to find a bottle that matches what matters to you.
That's why we clearly identify relevant attributes across our range — from certified organic and biodynamic wines to vegan-friendly, low-preservative and no-added-preservative options.
Know more about what you're drinking. Then choose the wine that's right for you.
